Australia's explosive all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a career spanning 14 years.

The 38-year-old confirmed his decision in an episode of The Final Word cricket podcast released on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

Maxwell also announced his retirement from domestic 50-over and four-day cricket for Victoria, while confirming that he intends to continue playing franchise T20 cricket.

Popularly known as 'The Big Show' for his aggressive batting and unconventional stroke play, Maxwell represented Australia in 286 international matches, featuring in seven Tests, 149 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 130 T20 Internationals (T20Is).

He scored 7,226 international runs and took 136 wickets across all three formats.

Maxwell had already retired from ODI cricket in June 2025 but remained available for Australia's T20I side. His final international appearance came against Oman during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in February 2026, where he claimed two wickets.

The all-rounder was part of Australia's successful campaigns in the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups, as well as the 2021 T20 World Cup.

One of the defining moments of his career came during the 2023 ODI World Cup, when he produced an extraordinary unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in Mumbai.

Coming in when Australia were struggling at 91-7 while chasing 292, Maxwell guided his team to an unlikely three-wicket victory with an unbeaten double century despite battling severe cramps.

He finished his ODI career with 3,990 runs at a strike rate of 126.7. In T20 internationals, he scored 2,897 runs at a strike rate of 154.4, including five centuries.

Maxwell is one of only two players, alongside India's Rohit Sharma, to have scored five centuries in men's T20 internationals.

Explaining his decision, Maxwell said he wanted to focus on maintaining his fitness and preserving his body for the remaining tournaments of his playing career.

He had hoped to receive a farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during Australia's upcoming T20 series against England but understood the selectors' decision to focus on younger players.

Despite ending his international career, Maxwell is expected to continue featuring in franchise competitions, including the upcoming Big Bash League season with Melbourne Stars.

His retirement marks the end of an international career defined by explosive batting, inventive shot-making and several memorable performances for Australia.
