England captain Harry Kane won the Ballon d’Or race on Monday, becoming the first Englishman in 25 years to claim football’s prestigious individual award, following a prolific season with Bayern Munich.

Kane follows former England striker Michael Owen, who won the award in 2001. The 33-year-old was recognised after scoring 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions in the 2025-26 season, helping Bayern secure a domestic league and cup double.

“Wow, wow, wow!” Kane said as he accepted the award in London. He thanked those who voted for him and congratulated the other winners and nominees, acknowledging the strength of this year’s competition.

Kane’s achievement marks a significant milestone in a career that began with loan spells away from Tottenham Hotspur before he established himself as one of Europe’s leading forwards. His move to Bayern in 2023 brought him the team silverware that had eluded him during his time in England.

The striker also continued to lead England’s attack during its World Cup campaign, scoring six goals as the team reached the semi-finals. His combined club and international performances strengthened his case for the award.

Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d’Or Feminin for the third time after helping Barcelona secure a treble and the Spanish Super Cup during the 2025-26 campaign.

Putellas joined Women’s Super League side London City Lionesses in July, ending a 14-year spell with Barcelona.
