South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to international justice and efforts to promote peace through international law, while US President Donald Trump was not selected for the honour.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on October 9, recognising Pillay’s longstanding work to strengthen international legal institutions and ensure accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. <escape>Reuters</escape>

Pillay, 85, is a former United Nations high commissioner for human rights who has spent decades working on human rights and international justice. Her legal career began under South Africa’s apartheid system, during which she defended anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela’s associates.

She later served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, taking part in efforts to strengthen the prosecution of serious international crimes.

The Nobel Committee highlighted the importance of international law in resolving conflicts without force and ensuring that victims of abuse can obtain justice.

Pillay’s selection comes as Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his diplomatic initiatives and claims of helping resolve international conflicts.

However, the Norwegian Nobel Committee chose Pillay for her work on human rights, accountability and the international legal system.

The committee received nominations for 287 candidates for the 2026 award, including individuals and organisations. The Nobel Peace Prize carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor.

Pillay’s award highlights the role of legal institutions and human rights protections in efforts to achieve lasting peace amid continuing international conflicts.
