Apple’s USD 1,999 iPhone Duo has failed a durability test conducted by YouTuber Zack Nelson, known as JerryRigEverything, after dust jammed its folding mechanism and a bending test permanently damaged its inner display.

The results have raised questions about the durability of Apple’s first foldable smartphone, particularly its hinge and flexible screen, which are among the device’s most important components.

In a video published on October 24, Nelson subjected the iPhone Duo to a series of scratch, dust, heat and bending tests to examine how well the device could withstand physical stress.

Dust jams iPhone Duo’s folding mechanism

The first major problem emerged during the dust test, when particles entered the phone’s hinge and prevented it from closing completely.

Despite Apple’s IP68 dust and water resistance rating, Nelson found that debris accumulated inside the folding mechanism. The particles appeared to interfere with the magnets responsible for holding the two halves of the phone together.

As a result, the device could no longer close properly, raising concerns about how its hinge might perform when exposed to dust and dirt.

However, the test does not establish how the phone would perform under normal everyday conditions, as Nelson deliberately subjected it to a demanding durability challenge.

Bend test damages inner display

The phone’s problems continued during the bending test, which caused permanent damage to its flexible inner display.

The screen developed a green line after pressure was applied to the unfolded device. Further bending produced additional lines before the inner display eventually stopped responding.

Nelson concluded that the iPhone Duo had not survived his durability test. However, he did not establish whether dust trapped inside the hinge contributed to the display failure or whether the folding mechanism lacked sufficient rigidity.

The findings highlight the engineering challenges associated with foldable smartphones, which must combine a flexible display with a hinge capable of withstanding repeated movement and external stress.

Inner screen proves more vulnerable to scratches

The scratch tests also revealed a difference in the durability of the phone’s two displays.

The outer screen showed only faint scratches at level seven on the Mohs hardness scale, while the flexible inner display began showing marks at level two.

Nelson noted that the inner screen’s matte coating helped make scratches less noticeable when the display was switched on, although the marks remained permanent.

The results underline the trade-off between the larger screen offered by a foldable device and the need to protect its more delicate display surface.

Repair costs add to durability concerns

The damage could also prove expensive for owners. During the test, Nelson cited an inner display replacement cost of approximately USD 1,000, about half the phone’s USD 1,999 purchase price.

That figure was cited during the test and should not be treated as a universal repair quote, as the final cost can depend on the repair option and applicable coverage.

While the test does not demonstrate that every iPhone Duo will suffer similar damage, it highlights potential vulnerabilities that buyers may want to consider before purchasing the device.

For Apple, the results place additional scrutiny on the durability of its foldable design, particularly as consumers weigh the benefits of a larger, flexible display against the cost of repairing a premium smartphone.
