Messi bids farewell to Argentina after 21-year international career
Lionel Messi ends his 21-year Argentina career with a goal and two assists in a 3-0 win over Benin in an emotional farewell at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium.

Lionel Messi brought his 21-year international career to an emotional close, scoring a goal and providing two assists as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.
More than 85,000 fans packed the stadium to witness Messi’s final appearance for Argentina, with the occasion turning into a celebration of one of the country’s most decorated football careers. The 39-year-old was visibly emotional before and during the match as supporters paid tribute to the national team captain.
Messi played a role in all three goals. His corner led to Nicolás Otamendi’s opener in the 48th minute, before he set up Nicolás Paz for Argentina’s second six minutes into the second half. Messi then completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 71st minute.
The farewell marked Messi’s 208th and final appearance for Argentina. He leaves as the country’s most-capped player and record scorer with 126 international goals.
Messi’s international career included two Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024 and Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph, ending years of disappointment with the national team.
“It was a source of great pride to wear this jersey for over 20 years,” Messi told supporters after the match, saying he would continue to support the national team and the players who follow him.
Messi will continue his club career with Inter Miami, but his farewell in Buenos Aires closes a defining chapter of his relationship with Argentina.
